There are many children’s books out there. You may ask what makes my books so unique. I want to take this opportunity to tell you about my “de Good Life Farm” series of nonfiction picture books and what makes them unique and worth a good look.
1. Photographs of real animals.

Each book in the “de Good Life Farm” series is about real animals and is filled with real-life pictures of the animals about which the book is written. Every book is about the animals on our farm, except one: It’s Cold Outside. Where is Your Jacket which includes animals from our farm as well as animals from some of my friends’ farms. For instance, the above pictures are of Mocha, the subject of my first book, her heifer calf, Dolly, her daughter, Elsie, and Elsie’s bull calf, Prince.
2. Unique stories told from the animals’ perspectives.

In my first book, My Name is Mocha, Mocha tells her story about her life on de Good Life Farm. She tells how she left her mama on the farm where she was born and came to live here. She tells how lonely she was until a new friend, Heidi, came to live on the farm. Mocha tells the reader about giving birth to her calves and how she takes care of them. The reader also learns about Mocha’s life as a dairy cow on a small farm.

In my second book, My Name is Merlin, Merlin, our rooster tells the story of his life on our farm. He tells the reader how he protects the hens from predators and teaches them to nourish the pasture and to listen to him.

Odin, our Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog, tells about his life here on the farm in My Name is Odin. He tells how he protects the chickens from flying and ground predators.
In another book, Odin and Merlin: The Amazing Team, both Odin and Merlin tell the reader how they “team up” and communicate to protect the hens from hawks and other predators. It is amazing how such a small protector and a large protector can work together for the good of those animals they protect.

The Mysterious Midnight Visitor” is told from both the farmer’s perspective and Hershey and Cocoa’s perspective when there are curious signs that SOMEONE has been visiting the farm during the night! Hershey and Cocoa (our calves) know who this visitor long before the farmer does! An exciting rodeo happens right here on the farm!
The same is true of the other books in the “de Good Life Farm” series. In the book, We Are Mocha’s Family, some of the many calves born here on the farm tell stories of their life. Freya tells her story in Odin and Freya’s Big Surprise.
3. A glossary.
One of the most unique characteristics of the “de Good Life Farm” book series is that each book includes a glossary of terms the young (or more experienced) reader may not be familiar with. This allows the books to serve as a teaching tool for parents and teachers.

Why should you care if my books are unique?
If you have children in your life, of course, you want to do your best for them. Providing healthy stimuli for their brains to be engaged and challenged is important. Good quality books allow children’s minds to travel to places they might not otherwise go. Children can learn about new things they may find interesting. Quality books may also encourage children to explore new horizons in their own lives when they are older.
Check out this article to learn why nonfiction books are important for children. My books meet some vital criteria of good nonfiction books for children. For example: the books a) answer questions about the lives of the animals on our farm; b) expand a child’s knowledge about a small farm when they might never get the chance to visit one; c) build a child’s vocabulary through the use of the glossary in each book; and, d) provide real pictures of the animals and farm life for the child to see.
Why books are important.
In this digital world, books may seem old-fashioned and inconvenient. However, click HERE to read the benefits of books versus screen time. Did you know that the brain of a child ages one to five develops at a faster rate than at any time in their lives? The article also talks about the potential benefits of reading versus the potential detriments of screen time.
